The United Arab Emirates dirham was introduced on 19 May 1973. It came to replace the Qatar and Dubai riyal at par. The Qatar and Dubai riyal had circulated since 1966 in all of the emirates- except Abu Dhabi, where the dirham replaced the Bahraini dinar at 1 dirham = 0.1 dinar. Before 1966, all the emirates that were to form the UAE used the Gulf rupee. As in Qatar, the emirates briefly adopted the Saudi riyal during the transition from the Gulf rupee to the Qatar and Dubai riyal.
Eventually, the currency in Dubai and theUnited Arab Emirates has become the dirham (AED or Arab Emirate Dirham- also commonly abbreviated to Dhs or DH). However, there are 1 dirham and 50 and 25 fils coins in common circulation.

The dirham to dollar exchange rate is often fixed at a rate of 3.6725 dirhams to US $1 (or 1 dirham equals 0.272 US dollars), but of course, this rate is of daily change.
You can find a multitude of banks and money exchange centers in Dubai, where currency can be exchanged. They are located all over the city- the easiest way to find exchange center to tourists it is probably by heading to the nearest shopping mall, where most will have at least one bank and a couple of money exchanges.
You’ll have no difficulty exchanging any major currency, as banks and exchanges in Dubai typically hold more currencies than those in Europe and the US due to the huge diversity of population in the country.
Generally, money exchange centers are better for exchanging money as they offer you better rates than banks do. They also have longer opening hours than banks. Best money exchanges around the UAE include: Al Fardan Exchange, Al Ansari Exchange and Al Ghurair Exchange.
